Ruby Dickson (1996, UK) is a painter based in London, UK. In her work, the artist examines the workings of desire and need as symptoms of capitalist systems of exchange. Working at pace and with intuition, Dickson’s paintings always look for the simplest expression of a feeling and the most immediate way to depict a subject, conveying a tension between urgency and vulnerability. In her most recent works, Dickson appropriates pop culture icons and cartoon characters to analyse contemporary modes of production, circulation and consumption of images, which she addresses in relation to the specific temporality and materiality of paint. As an artist of Irish and Jamaican descent, Dickson uses her investigation into contemporary spectacle to reflect upon the progressive ambiguation and constant redistribution of identification processes.
